Ellicott City Student Elected President of

60th Annual Girls Nation

For Immediate Release:

CHEVY CHASE, MD. – Girls Nation Senator Noor Oweis of Ellicott City, Md., a senior at Mt. Hebron High School and daughter of Drs. Badr and Afaf  Oweis, was elected Wednesday, July 26, as President of the American Legion Auxiliary’s week long youth government program.  Fellow Girls Nation senators chose Oweis over her Federalist Party opponent, Laura Redfern of Henderson, Nev.

Oweis met with constituents in “whistle stop” meetings where she fielded questions concerning national and international issues.  She ran as a candidate of the Nationalist Party on a platform which emphasized diplomacy through foreign aid and mediation; encouraging free enterprise; reduction of  the federal deficit; environmental protection through conservation and development of alternative fuel sources; increased funding for education; and a strong Homeland security policy.  Her running mate, Angela Cobian of Litleton, Colo., was elected Girls Nation Vice President.  One of her key appointments will be to name fellow Md. Senator Arly-Lian Costa of Gaithersburg as White House Chief of Staff.

Oweis will be sworn into office Thursday, July 27 in the Dirksen Senate Office Building by American Legion Auxiliary National President, Carol Van Kirk, of Sutton, Neb.

The American Legion Auxiliary believes in the importance of educating and training young women in the ideals and objectives of American government by giving them the motivation and support for success.  These future leaders who comprise Girls Nation, represent the voice of teenagers from across the country.    Participants in Girls Nation bring with them the ideas and concerns of today’s youth, as they look ahead to a world they will shape.
